Is Shankar IAS Environment book necessary for UPSC Prelims and Mains?

Shankar IAS’s Environment is a foundational resource for UPSC, but it is best viewed as a static guide rather than a complete solution. While it remains a "must-read" for building a basic framework, its necessity varies between the Prelims and Mains.
For the Prelims, the book is highly effective for mastering static concepts like ecology, nutrient cycles, biodiversity, and international conventions. It compiles vast amounts of factual data—such as protected area networks and legal acts—into a single volume, making it a reliable tool for objective questions.
For the Mains, Shankar IAS is not sufficient on its own. The Environment section of GS Paper III is increasingly dynamic and analytical. While the book helps you define terms or cite laws like the Environment Protection Act, it lacks the depth required to discuss contemporary policy debates, climate justice, or the socio-economic impacts of environmental degradation.
The most effective strategy is a selective approach. Start with the last four chapters of the Class 12 Biology NCERT for a quick conceptual base. Use Shankar IAS primarily for static topics, then bridge the gap with Current Affairs from sources like Down To Earth magazine. This ensures you have the factual clarity from the textbook and the analytical edge from current news needed to tackle the modern UPSC pattern.
