What is the difference in day-to-day roles between an IAS, IPS, and IFS officer?
- IAS: Acts as a generalist, often serving as the District Magistrate (DM) who oversees all departments in a district, including the police in certain magisterial matters.
- IPS: Operates within a uniformed hierarchy, focusing on direct action, criminal justice, and managing specialised agencies like the CBI or Intelligence Bureau (IB).
- IFS: Operates under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), with most of their career spent abroad in Indian Missions. They must also learn a foreign language as part of their early training.
