What is the salary structure, allowances, and career progression for an entry-level IAS officer?
For an entry-level IAS officer (Pay Level 10), the starting basic pay is ₹56,100 per month under the 7th Pay Commission. Including allowances, the initial gross monthly salary typically ranges between ₹80,000 and ₹1,00,000, which translates to an in-hand salary of approximately ₹75,000 to ₹85,000 after mandatory deductions.
Salary Structure & Allowances
The total compensation is composed of several fixed and variable components:
Basic Pay: Fixed at ₹56,100 for entry-level posts like Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) or Assistant Secretary.
Dearness Allowance (DA): An inflation-linked component revised twice a year. Current rates are approximately 46–50% of basic pay.
House Rent Allowance (HRA): Provided if official accommodation is not used. It depends on the city category:
Class X (Metros): 24% of basic pay.
Class Y (Cities > 5L population): 16% of basic pay.
Class Z (Rural/Other): 8% of basic pay.
Travel Allowance (TA): Fixed monthly amount to cover commuting, typically around ₹3,200 to ₹7,600 depending on the location.
Key Perks: Includes government-allotted bungalows, official vehicles with drivers, security personnel, subsidised utilities (electricity/water), and comprehensive medical benefits for the officer and family.
