The Detailed Application Form (DAF) is the most critical document an aspirant fills out during the UPSC journey.
It is required twice: DAF-I after clearing the Prelims and DAF-II after clearing the Mains. It serves as a comprehensive biographical record, capturing your educational background, professional experience, service preferences, hobbies, and achievements.
The importance of the DAF cannot be overstated, particularly for the Personality Test (Interview). Since the UPSC interview is not a knowledge test but an assessment of your character and suitability for administration, the panel uses your DAF as the primary basis for their questions. Almost 70-80% of interview questions are derived directly from the information you provide in this form.
A well-drafted DAF allows you to "guide" the interview toward your strengths. For instance, your choice of hobbies or your graduation subjects can become focal points for discussion.
