Answer writing practice should begin once you have a solid grasp of the core syllabus, typically 3 to 4 months into your preparation. Starting too early often leads to frustration because quality answers require sufficient "input" and the ability to interlink different subjects.

A structured approach involves three phases:

  1. Foundation Phase (Months 1–3): Focus entirely on building knowledge through NCERTs and standard books. You cannot write effectively if you lack content.
  2. Transition Phase (Months 4–6): Begin with Previous Year Questions (PYQs). Write one answer daily without worrying about a timer. Focus purely on structure—crafting a clear introduction, a multi-dimensional body, and a forward-looking conclusion.
  3. Intensive Phase (Months 7–10): Join a Mains Test Series to simulate the actual exam environment. This phase is about developing the speed and stamina needed to write 20 high-quality answers in just three hours.
An effective way to bridge the gap is by summarizing daily newspaper editorials. This builds the habit of structuring thoughts concisely before tackling formal UPSC questions.
